DTN News: China Emerging As Player In Global Arms Trade....NSI News Source Info # 1236

(NSI News Source Info) ZHUHAI, China - November 20, 2010: China is emerging as a competitor in the international arms market, offering increasingly sophisticated fighter jets, missiles and equipment that are beginning to rival Russia and other longtime exporters.
With the same low-cost strategy that worked for toys and electronics, Chinese firms are targeting cost-conscious customers, albeit in an industry still dominated by the United States, Russia, France and Britain.

The Chinese challenge has been on display at this week's Zhuhai air show, a biannual aviation industry event that wraps up Sunday.
Pilots have given aerial displays of China's latest-generation J-10 fighter, and exhibition halls are stocked with models and mock-ups from military aircraft maker

DTN News: Satellite Appears To Show North Korea Nuke Building....NSI News Source Info # 1230

(NSI News Source Info) SEOUL, South Korea - November 19, 2010: New satellite images show construction under way at North Korea's main Yongbyon atomic complex, apparent proof that Pyongyang is making good on its pledge to build a light-water nuclear reactor, according to a private American security institute.
North Korea vowed in March to build such a reactor using its own nuclear fuel, and two American experts who recently visited the North have reportedly said that construction has begun.
Light-water reactors are ostensibly for civilian energy
purposes, but such a power plant would give the North a reason to enrich uranium. At low levels, uranium can be used in power reactors, but at higher levels it can be used in nuclear bombs.

It also said that China Telecom had briefly "hijacked" U.S. Internet traffic in April, charges the company has denied.
"This report ignores the facts, is full of Cold War thinking and political bias," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said in a statement carried on the ministry's Website (

(NSI News Source Info) WSHINGTON, - November 19, 2010: Israel is in talks with the United States to acquire an additional 20 Lockheed Martin Corp (LMT.N) F-35 fighter jets, a senior Israeli defense official said on Wednesday.

"As I understand -- and that's the latest information I have on this issue -- it's still under negotiation between the Israeli government and the administration," he said, speaking at a news conference alongside Admiral Mike Mullen, the top U.S. military officer.
"I don't know the final decision," Ashkenazi said.

DTN News: Geopolitical Journey, Part 4: Moldova....NSI News Source Info # 1227

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - November 19, 2010: Moldova is a country in need of explanation, two explanations in fact. First, there is the question of what kind of country Moldova is. Second, there is the question of why anyone should care. Oddly, I went to Moldova thinking I knew the answer to the second question but not the first. I came away unsure of either. Let’s begin with the second question: Why does Moldova matter?
The second article in this series, “Borderlands,” described the re-emergence of Russian regional power following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
Russian national security is dependent on two countries that became independent following the collapse. Belarus is the buffer between Russia and Europe on the North European Plain. Ukraine is the buffer between Russia and the Carpathian Mountains. From the Russian point of view, dominating these countries is less important than Europe and the United States not dominating them. The Russians have achieved this and perhaps more.
Ukraine is Russia’s southwestern anchor and its Achilles’ heel. It is difficult for Russia to be secure without Ukraine both for economic and strategic reasons. Russia would be hard to defend if Ukraine were under the control of a hostile power. What Ukraine is to Russia, Moldova is to Ukraine. It is a salient that makes Ukraine difficult to defend, and if Ukraine can’t be defended Russia can’t be defended either. Or so my reasoning went at the beginning of my visit.

DTN News: Pakistan TODAY November 16, 2010 - U.S. Missile Strike Kills 20 Militants In Pakistan....NSI News Source Info # 1201

(NSI News Source Info) PESHAWAR, Pakistan - November 16, 2010: Unmanned U.S. drone aircraft on Tuesday fired four missiles into North Waziristan, a major sanctuary for al Qaeda and Taliban militants in Pakistan, killing at least 20 insurgents, local officials said.
The missiles struck a fortress-like compound and a vehicle in Ghulam Khan village on the Afghan border early in the morning.
"Some of the militants were on foot. They had just returned from Afghanistan when they were hit," an intelligence official in the region said.
"So far, the death toll is 20."
There was no independent confirmation of the incident as the war zone is located in a remote part of Pakistan. Militant groups often dispute officials' account of such attacks and casualties.
North Waziristan is the main base of Afghan militants fighting Western forces across the border. The United States has stepped up missile strikes there in recent months as it struggles to stabilise war-ravaged Afghanistan.

In February, Lebanese President Michel Sleiman announced during a visit to Moscow that Russia had agreed to a request for Mi-24 helicopter gunships instead of the MIG-29 fighter jets originally promised in 2008.

(NSI News Source Info) KABUL, Afghanistan - November 15, 2010: Masooma Hussaini's path to becoming one of the Aghan air force's first female military pilot candidates began with a TV advertisement encouraging young women to join. She registered to take the exams for officer candidate school. Just a few months later, she was selected for a new pilot training program. The idea of female military pilots -- some of the most coveted military positions -- would have been unthinkable in Afghanistan just a decade ago, when the Taliban had relegated women to the bottom of the social scale, with no access to education, let alone jobs. But now Hussaini, 19, and four of her female colleagues, have broken yet another barrier: They are second lieutenants in the Afghan air force, on a path to becoming the first newly trained female pilots since the fall of the Taliban.
The five women are studying with more than a dozen men at the Thunder Lab, a recently opened English-language and cultural-immersion center for pilot candidates in Kabul. Here, they study English, which is now a requirement for all pilots.
The only modification to the women's uniforms are black scarves covering their hair. Most of the women, like Hussaini, joined after seeing TV advertisements, but they also typically had support -- and even encouragement -- from their family. Khetera Ayoub Pur, another second lieutenant, rattles off the names of family members who have served in the military. For her, joining the military was a family tradition and a matter of national pride. The women, who are still a novelty at the base, will not be Afghan air force's first female pilots, however. There is one female pilot, who was trained before the Taliban regime came to power. But the young women are still very much an anomaly, and, if they do become pilots, they will face two divides: gender and age. The average Afghan military pilot is his mid- to late 40s, and typically trained somewhere in the former Soviet Union. The female pilot candidates -- most of whom are still teenagers -- will be Western-trained and decades younger than many of their counterparts.
