LAHORE, Pakistan

- April 30, 2011:

Police on Saturday arrested several stone-wielding demonstrators who smashed up a Christian school and attempted to attack a church following protests against the alleged desecration of a Koran.

A crowd of around 500 gathered in the suburbs of Gujranwala district near Lahore, the main town of central Punjab province, after two burnt pages of the Islamic holy book were recovered from a Christian graveyard, police said.

Local clerics blamed the Christian community for the incident and used speeches at mosques on Saturday morning to inform others and call a protest against the alleged blasphemy.

In the afternoon, more than 500 rock and stone carrying demonstrators marched towards a church and attempted to attack it after smashing a Christian missionary school, police said.

"They entered the school and broke the furniture there. They tried to march towards a Church but we have dispersed them," Ghulam Mubashir Mekan, senior police officer in Gujranwala told AFP by telephone.

DTN News - EGYPT NEWS: Mubarak Faces Death If Convicted In Protester Shootings....NSI News Source Info # 1888

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - April 30, 2011:

Egypt's ousted president Hosni Mubarak will be sentenced to death if the courts find him responsible for the death of hundreds of pro-democracy protesters, the country's new justice minister said on Saturday.

Mohammed el-Guindi told the Al-Ahram newspaper that Mubarak, his wife and two sons are facing allegations of corruption stemming from 30 years in power.

Mubarak, 82, stepped down from office in February following an 18-day protest centralized on Cairo's Tahrir Square. At least 846 protesters were killed during the uprising.

Mubarak was later placed under arrest, after spending time in a hospital suffering from heart problems, and accused of ordering the use of deadly force.

El-Guindi said that Mubarak will be tried for the protesters' deaths, adding that former Interior Minister Habib el-Adly could testify that Mubarak had ordered him to open fire on the protesters.

The Dominican Republic: a nation on the island of Hispaniola, part of the Greater Antilles archipelago in the Caribbean region. The western third of the island is occupied by the nation of Haiti, making Hispaniola one of two Caribbean islands that are shared by two countries. Both by area and population, the Dominican Republic is the second largest Caribbean nation (after Cuba), with 48,442 square kilometres (18,704 sq mi) and an estimated 10 million people.

Inhabited by Taínos since the 7th century, the territory of the Dominican Republic was reached by Christopher Columbus in 1492 and became the site of the first permanent European settlement in the Americas, namely Santo Domingo, the country's capital and Spain's first capital in the New World. In Santo Domingo stand, among other firsts in the Americas, the first university, cathedral, and castle, the latter two in the Ciudad Colonial area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

After three centuries of Spanish rule, with French and Haitian interludes, the country became independent in 1821 but was quickly taken over by Haiti. Victorious in the Dominican War of Independence in 1844, Dominicans experienced mostly internal strife, and also a brief return to Spanish rule, over the next 72 years. The United States occupation of 1916–1924, and a subsequent, calm and prosperous six-year period under Horacio Vásquez Lajara, were followed by the dictatorship of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina until 1961. The civil war of 1965, the country's last, was ended by a U.S.-led intervention, and was followed by the authoritarian rule of Joaquín Balaguer, 1966–1978. Since then, the Dominican Republic has moved toward representative democracy, and has been led by Leonel Fernández for most of the time after 1996.

DTN News - WHITE HOUSE / PENTAGON NEWS: President Barack Obama Praises Gates, Nominates New Security Team‏....NSI News Source Info # 1875

(NSI News Source Info)

WASHINGTON, - April 28, 2011: - President Barack Obama today thanked Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates for his service as he officially announced his intention to nominate CIA Director Leon E. Panetta to lead the Pentagon after Gates retires June 30.

Obama said Gates will go down in history as one of the finest defense secretaries in U.S. history.

The president also nominated Army Gen. David H. Petraeus to succeed Panetta at the CIA and Marine Corps Lt. Gen. John R. Allen to succeed Petraeus as commander of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan. Obama also is nominating Ryan C. Crocker to return from retirement and serve as U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan. The nominations are subject to Senate confirmation.

"Given the pivotal period that we're entering, I felt that it was absolutely critical that we had this team in place so that we can stay focused on our missions, maintain our momentum and keep our nation secure," Obama said in the White House East Room.

Gates will step down after serving more than four and a half years in office. President George W. Bush nominated Gates for the job at a time when prospects in Iraq looked bleak. The surge of U.S. forces into Iraq was hitting its stride, and hundreds of attacks occurred each day on coalition forces in the country.

DTN News - TECHNOLOGY NEWS: Sony Working With Police On PlayStation Hack....NSI News Source Info # 1868

(NSI News Source Info) TOKYO, Japan - April 28, 2011:

Sony said it was working with investigators after hackers stole data from users of its PlayStation Network, and told customers it would restore services only when it was confident it was secure.

The PlayStation Network and Qriocity streaming music service were turned off on April 20 in the wake of an "external intrusion," according to Sony spokesman Patrick Seybold.

"We are currently working with law enforcement on this matter as well as a recognised technology security firm to conduct a complete investigation," Seybold said in a blog posted Thursday on the PlayStation website.

"This malicious attack against our system and against our customers is a criminal act and we are proceeding aggressively to find those responsible."

Launched in November 2006, the PlayStation Network allows PlayStation console users to play games online, challenge others on the Internet, stream movies, or get other services.

The Japanese electronics giant said it was possible hackers had taken users' credit card data.

DTN News - INDIA DEFENSE NEWS: Eurofighter, French Dassault Shortlisted For IAF MMRCA Deal?....NSI News Source Info # 1865

(NSI News Source Info) NEW DELHI, India - April 27, 2011:

The defence ministry has asked Eurofighter and French Dassault Aviation to extend validity of their commercial bids for the multi-billion dollar contract for 126 combat aircraft, sources said here on Wednesday night, in an indication they could be shortlisted for IAF’s mega deal.

However, defence ministry officials refused to divulge any details in this regard.

Sources in the two foreign firms said the defence ministry had sent a communication to them and that it significantly came on the eve of the expiry of commercial bids of defence majors who were in the race.

The sources said the ministry has written letters only to Eurofighter and Rafale to extend the validity of their commercial offers.

Eurofighter is built by a consortium of four countries--UK, Italy, Spain and Germany -- whereas the Rafale is a French aircraft developed by Dassault Aviation.

Alongwith these two fighters, four other aircraft--the American F-16 and F/A-18, Russian MiG 35 and Swedish Saab Gripen-- vied with each other in the five-year long tender for the much awaited deal.

Following the defence ministry communication, the remaining four companies will now not be allowed to extend the validity of their offers and their bids will expire tomorrow.

DTN News - CANADA DEFENSE NEWS: Tories Shrug Off Multiple Warnings On Fighter-Jet Price Tag....NSI News Source Info # 1863

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - April 27, 2011:

Stephen Harper tried to reassure Canadians Tuesday that taxpayerswon’t get soaked by a rising price tag for 65 stealth fighter-bombers the Conservatives are buying from the Americans.

The Department of National Defence said this week it’s been warned to expect the per-unit price of the F-35 jets might be higher than the $75-million it’s been advertising to Canadians.

This follows two developments that could spell trouble for the Conservatives: a recent Pentagon report detailing rising production costs for the jets as well as leaked U.S. defence paper that suggests 30 years of maintenance costs could be three times higher than Ottawa has acknowledged.
