DTN News - TURKISH DEFENSE NEWS: Turkish PM Focuses On Defense Industry In Poll Campaign....NSI News Source Info # 2065

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada / ANKARA, Turkey - June 11, 2011:
Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party, or AKP, is putting an unprecedented emphasis on the defense industry in its campaign for the June 12 elections. The party's promises focus on establishing and developing a domestic industry that comes near to being self-sufficient. PM Recep Tayyip Erdoğan says the capital city of Ankara will become the headquarters of the sector.

Visions for the defense industry have not played a key role in election campaigns by either a ruling or opposition party ahead of previous Turkish polls. But this year, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has been holding up Turkey’s developing national defense industry as one of the pillars of a modern economy in the 2020s.

In the weeks leading up to the nationwide parliamentary election that will be held June 12, Erdoğan had made three major speeches on the national defense industry.

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - June 11, 2011:
The International Defense Exhibition, otherwise known as IDEX, has been held bi-annually in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) since 1993. It is the largest defense expo in the Middle East and North Africa and one of the biggest in the world. But far from being a one-off, it highlights the UAE’s growing stature as a global arms buyer.

This year’s IDEX took place in the glistening Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center. Its high ceilings and massive rooms displayed a diverse array of high-tech weaponry against the backdrop of heavily illuminated signboards like the ones you see in the showrooms of luxury car dealerships. All the big Western defense corporations were there — Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Dyncorp, Northrup Grumman, European Aeronautic Defense and Space Co. — as well as Chinese companies, including China North. There were also a host of local companies including Arabian Aerospace, Abu Dhabi Ship Building Company, and the state-owned Mubadala. Like all of these events, it was a heavily male enterprise. The exhibitors wore suits. The visitors wore either the military uniform of the UAE or traditional Arab dress.

DTN News - TAIWAN DEFENSE NEWS: Pressure Builds For Sale Of F-16 Jets To Taiwan....NSI News Source Info # 2057

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - June 8, 2011: Congress is stepping up pressure on the Obama administration to sell more F-16 jet fighters to Taiwan as the island’s air defenses deteriorate and China’s air power grows.

Sen. John Cornyn, a leading advocate for efforts to bolster Taiwan’s defenses as well as to keep a U.S. production line open for new F-16s, said Tuesday that the shifting military balance across the 100-mile-wide Taiwan Strait is increasing the danger of a conflict that could involve the United States.

“While the administration dithers on Taiwan’s request for F-16s, evidence continues to mount that what Taiwan desperately needs to restore the cross-strait balance and regain the ability to defend its own airspace is new fighter aircraft to bolster an air force that is borderline obsolete,” the Texas Republican and Armed Services Committee member said in the Senate.

The golf buggy is a twisted skeleton of metal.

A once ornate silk rug is shredded to rags.

And all that’s left of the Bedouin tent is its scorched earth footprint.

When Moammar Gadhafi goes desert Arab — his preferred home-away-from-home accommodation — it is to venues such as this man-made oasis in the Libyan countryside where he escapes, putting down stakes, reclining on pillows, sheik-y.

“Our leader likes nature in the wide open spaces,’’ explains a man who gives his name as Mohammed Ali, waving an arm across the smouldering expanse of the encampment.

NATO bombardiers found it, nailed it, obliterated it.

DTN News - U.S. NEWS: U.S. Debt Default Unimaginable, Creditors Say....NSI News Source Info # 2053

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada / SINGAPORE - June 8, 2011: Allowing a brief U.S. debt default to force government spending cuts is a "horrible idea" that could destabilize the world economy and sour already tense relations with big creditors like China, government officials and investors said on Wednesday.

A growing number of Republican lawmakers think a technical debt default might be a price worth paying if it gets the White House to accept deep spending cuts. This idea, once confined to the party's fringe, is seeping into the mainstream, Reuters reported on Tuesday.

"How can the U.S. be allowed to default?" said an official at India's central bank. "We don't think this is a possibility because this could then create huge panic globally."

Indian officials say they have little choice but to buy U.S. Treasury debt because it is still among the world's safest and most liquid investments. It held $39.8 billion in U.S. Treasuries as of March, according to U.S. data.

DTN News - ALGERIA DEFENSE NEWS: Rosvertol Seeks Algeria Mi-28 Export Deal....NSI News Source Info # 2052

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada /
ROSTOV-ON-DON, Russia
- June 7, 2011:
Russia's Rosvertol attack helicopter producer said on Monday it is in talks with Algeria over exports of its Mi-28NE for delivery from 2012-2017.

"A commercial proposal has already been sent [to Algiers] and discussions will begin this year," Rosvertol General Director Boris Slyusar said. "We hope to sign a contract for delivery in 2012-2017."

Rosvertol is the attack helicopter arm of the state-owned Russian Helicopters holding company.

If successful, the deal will be the second export sale of the night-capable Mi-28NE, which is currently being introduced to the Russian armed forces. Venezuela ordered ten Mi-28s in 2010, but they have not yet been delivered.

The Mi-28NE is a two-seat dedicated attack helicopter, equipped with a mast-mounted millimeter-wave fire control radar and advanced night vision optical systems.

The machine is armed with the Ataka anti-armor missile system.

Algeria already operates the Mi-25, an export derivative of the Russian forces Mi-24 attack helicopter.
