DTN News - Weapons Of Mass Destruction WMD NEWS: Eyeing Nuclear Sites, Iran Tests New Anti-Aircraft Missile....NSI News Source Info # 1830
**Missile has higher "destruction power" and is meant to defend Tehran's nuclear plants, report says; official blames US, Israel for Stuxnet worm.
(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - April 16, 2011:
Iran on Saturday tested a new anti-aircraft missile system dubbed the Sayyad-2 and the country's defense officials said the system will be deployed throughout the country in the near future, Fars News Agency reported.

Tehran had previously introduced the Sayyad-1 surface-to-air missile which is capable of destroying targets with a low Radar Cross Section (RCS) at low and medium altitudes, and can also defuse electronic warfare attacks, according to Fars report.

The newest Sayyad-2 is an upgraded version of the system and has "higher precision, range and destruction power," said the report.

Iranian Lietenant Commander Colonel Abolfazi Farmahini said recent tests of the mid-range hawk anti-aircraft missiles, conducted near the Khondab nuclear facility, successfully hit their targets. He said the test was aimed at assessing the level of preparedness of the system in defending Iran's nuclear plants.

Farmahini said the Khatam ol-Anbia Air Defense Base tests the missiles regularly to strengthen the country's defense capabilities.

Also Saturday, Iranian military officials said the US and Israelare behind the Stuxnet computer worm that has harmed the country's nuclear program, AFP reported quoting IRNA.

"Investigations and studies show that the source of Stuxnet originates from America and the Zionist regime," Gholam Reza Jalali, the commander of the Iranian civil defense organization, said.

Afghan suicide blast kills Kandahar police chief

The killings at the police headquarters in Kandahar city are a serious blow to security in the province, seen as the birthplace of the Taliban and a pivotal battleground in the near ten-year war against the Islamist militants.

They are the latest in a wave of insurgent attacks against the 120,000-strong Afghan police, who are due to take on more responsibility for security ahead of the planned withdrawal of foreign combat troops in 2014

DTN News - NUCLEAR SAFETY NEWS: Japan, China, S. Korea To Hold Tokyo Summit....NSI News Source Info # 1827
(NSI News Source Info) TOKYO, Japan - April 15, 2011:

The leaders of Japan, China and South Korea will hold a two-day summit in Tokyo from May 21 to discuss nuclear safety, disaster preparedness and other issues, Japan's government said Friday.

Japan's centre-left Prime Minister Naoto Kan will meet Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak in the annual three-way meeting, Japan's top government spokesman Yukio Edano told reporters.

"The summit aims to boost cooperation and dialogue in various fields between the leaders of the three countries that have a big responsibility for the stability and prosperity of the Asia-Pacific region," Edano said.

"During the upcoming summit, they will also discuss ways to strengthen cooperation in disaster prevention and nuclear safety in the wake of the Great East Japan Disaster," he said at a press conference.

The Northeast Asian three-way meetings on regional and global issues started in their current format in 2008. South Korea hosted the meeting last year.

This year's talks will come more than two months after the massive March 11 earthquake and tsunami brought Japan's worst post-war disaster and triggered an ongoing nuclear emergency that has sparked global concern.

ABUJA, Nigeria

- April 15, 2011:

A last-minute bid by Nigeria's main opposition parties to form an alliance against President Goodluck Jonathan in this weekend's election has failed to reach a deal, a party official said Wednesday.

At the same time, one of the opposition parties said Jonathan has contacted some of its high-ranking members ahead of Saturday's vote, but details of those discussions were not made clear.

The country's two main opposition parties had renewed talks this week, with many suggesting their combined strength could force the ruling party into a runoff for the first time since Nigeria returned to civilian rule in 1999.

"We regret to announce that such talks have not led to any such alliance," said Bisi Akande, chairman of the Action Congress of Nigeria party, which is strong in Nigeria's southwest, where the economic capital Lagos is located.

DTN News - U.S. DEFENSE BUDGET NEWS: Lockheed Martin F-35 Fighter Program Cut By Budget Compromise....NSI News Source Info # 1824

DTN News - U.S. DEFENSE BUDGET NEWS: Lockheed Martin F-35 Fighter Program Cut By Budget Compromise....NSI News Source Info # 1824
(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - April 14, 2011:
The budget compromise up for consideration by Congress cuts $2.16 billion from Lockheed Martin Corp.'s F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program and doesn't include money for the jet's alternative engine being developed by General Electric Co. and Rolls Royce Group PLC.

The White House and congressional leaders agreed to a $670.8 billion Defense Department appropriations bill for 2011 that is $18.1 billion below the Pentagon's original request for the fiscal year that ends Sept. 30. The base budget proposed for the Pentagon is $513 billion while funds for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan remain at $157.8 billion, the amount requested by the Obama administration, according to budget details released by the Senate.

The House and Senate are expected to vote on the bill by Friday, part of the plan to avert a government shutdown when the current stopgap funding measure is set to expire. The numbers released Tuesday don't include military construction projects, which are approved by Congress in a separate bill.

The bill proposes a cut of $2.16 billion from the F-35 program because of production and aircraft testing delays, according to the document. The $382 billion program to build variations of the aircraft for the Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps is under scrutiny because of rising costs and schedule slips, including technical hurdles in developing the Marine Corps' short-takeoff and vertical-landing version.

DTN News - LAAD-2011 NEWS: Russia Aims To Expand Presence On Latin American Arms Market....NSI News Source Info # 1823
(NSI News Source Info)

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil

- April 14, 2011:

The arms market in Latin America, especially in Brazil, show a great potential for exports of Russian weaponry, a senior Russian defense industry official said.

More than 300 types of weaponry are being showcased by Russia at the Latin America Aero and Defense 2011 (LAAD-2011) arms show in Rio de Janeiro on April 12-15.

"The arms market of Latin America is expansive and promising. Brazil holds a leading position among our partners in terms of its potential for the acquisition of [Russian] military hardware and equipment," said Sergei Goreslavsky, the head of marketing at Russian Technologies State Corporation, who leads the Russian delegation at the LAAD-2011.

In addition to the wide array of combat aircraft and helicopters, including the Sukhoi Su-35 and Su-30MK2 multirole fighters andKa-52 Hokum B attack helicopters, Russia will focus on marketing its highly-acclaimed air defense systems, such as S-400, Tor-M2E, Buk-M2E, Tunguska-M1, Pantsyr-S1, and Igla-S.

"Modern warfare, as the recent events in Northern Africa confirmed, is conducted mainly from the air," Goreslavsky said. "That's why the purchase of advanced air defense systems offered by Russia becomes a serious consideration."

"We are hoping to gain some ground in this direction," the official added.

Russia, the world's second largest arms exporter after the United States, sold $8.6 billion worth of weaponry last year and is looking to increase its arms sales to almost $10 bln in 2011.

Rosoboronexport has established mutually beneficial arms trade ties with Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia, Uruguay, and Ecuador through active marketing efforts. These countries express their interest in Russian air defense systems, radars, combat aircraft and helicopters, naval equipment, and small arms.

DTN News - TAIWAN DEFENSE NEWS: Taiwan Military Stages Highway Landing, Takeoff Drill In Tainan....NSI News Source Info # 1822

Six jets - two F-16s, two Mirage 2000-5s and two Taiwan-built Indigenous Defence Fighters - landed on a motorway near Tainan(台南) city, where they refuelled and loaded with missiles and other ammunition before taking off again.

The exercise is part of a series of war games stretching over a five-day period and codenamed 'Han Kuang(漢光) 27', or 'Han Glory 27', which involved more than 1,300 soldiers.

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - April 14, 2011:

The ROC military held an emergency landing and takeoff drill on a stretch of Freeway No. 1 near Madou District in Tainan City in the early morning of April 12 as part of the annual Hankuang exercises.

The drill simulated a wartime situation in which runways at airbases in southern Taiwan are destroyed by mainland Chinese guided missile attacks, according to the Ministry of National Defense. “In such an event, sections of highways that have been designed to accommodate military aircraft need to be employed,” said the MND.

The ROC air force’s three main jet fighters, the F-16, Indigenous Defense Fighter and Mirage 2000, took part in the one-hour drill. Other aircraft participating in the exercise included the CH-47 transport, OH-58D scout and attack, and AH-1W Super Cobra attack helicopters.

This marked the first time that the air force and army’s airborne and special operations unit have jointly taken part in such an exercise.
