DTN News: CHRISTMAS GREETINGS: To Our Readers & Viewers From DTN News Defense-Technology News

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - December 24, 2012:  In the Western world, the birthday of Jesus Christ has been celebrated on December 25th since AD 354, replacing an earlier date of January 6th. The Christians had by then appropriated many pagan festivals and traditions of the season, that were practiced in many parts of the Middle East and Europe, as a means of stamping them out.

There were mid-winter festivals in ancient Babylon and Egypt, and Germanic fertility festivals also took place at this time. The birth of the ancient sun-god Attis in Phrygia was celebrated on December 25th, as was the birth of the Persian sun-god, Mithras.

The Romans celebrated Saturnalia, a festival dedicated to Saturn, the god of peace and plenty, that ran from the 17th to 24th of December. Public gathering places were decorated with flowers, gifts and candles were exchanged and the population, slaves and masters alike, celebrated the occasion with great enthusiasm.

DTN News - EGYPT UNREST: Tanks Deployed In Cairo After Deadly Clashes

(NSI News Source Info) SINGAPORE - December 6, 2012: Egypt's worst violence since President Mohammed Morsi was elected forced the army to deploy tanks in Cairo Thursday, as hundreds of people were hurt in clashes between Islamists and the secular opposition.

Morsi was expected to deliver a televised address to the nation after five people were killed overnight in the worst violence since his June election, pitting Islamists against an opposition that has escalated protests since he assumed extensive powers on November 22.

Running street battles outside the Itihadiya palace in northern Cairo also left 644 people wounded, many from birdshot, the health ministry reported.

By Thursday morning, the Republican Guard, the division tasked with protecting the presidency, deployed tanks outside the palace. A few hundred Morsi supporters remained outside the complex after the opposition left.

Republican Guard chief General Mohammed Zaki said the tanks were deployed to separate warring protesters, and pledged that the military "will not be an instrument of oppress
The opposition has said it would organise further marches to the palace as a top presidential aide accused them of coordinating with loyalists of deposed dictator Hosni Mubarak.

A senior presidential aide told AFP Morsi was expected to make a speech later in the day to reach out to the opposition. No time was announced for the address.

The stage was set for Wednesday's violence when Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood movement announced a march to the palace, where opposition protesters were staging a sit-in a day after tens of thousands surrounded the sprawling complex.

DTN News - U.S., CHINA JOINT MILITARY EXERCISE: China And U.S. Militaries In Joint Disaster Exercise

(NSI News Source Info) SINGAPORE - December 2, 2012: The Chinese and U.S. militaries held joint disaster response exercises Nov. 30 as Beijing increases its global reach and Washington continues its “pivot” to the Pacific.

The joint drill, which saw officers from both nations express hopes for closer ties, came amid rising concerns in Japan, the Philippines and Vietnam over China’s territorial claims in disputed seas.

During the mock drills at a Chinese military base on the outskirts of Chengdu, the two sides worked together on computer-generated disaster scenarios in fictionalized countries.

“China and the U.S. are separated by the Pacific Ocean. Our two militaries joining hands ... answers to the aspirations of the two sides,” Tang Fen, of the People’s Liberation Army, told reporters after the two-day exercise finished.

“This plays a very important role in relations between our two nations and two militaries.”

U.S. Maj. Gen. Stephen Lyons said, “If there is a country out there, and inevitably there will be, that will have a natural disaster, and they call for international help, if U.S. forces and Chinese forces respond, then indeed we’ll find ourselves working together in the field.”

DTN News - SINGAPORE NEWS: Singapore Deports Striking Chinese Bus Drivers

DTN News - SINGAPORE NEWS: Singapore Deports Striking Chinese Bus Drivers

(NSI News Source Info) SINGAPORE - December 2, 2012: Singapore on Sunday deported 29 mainland Chinese bus drivers involved in the city-state's first industrial strike in 26 years.

The drivers, working for state-linked transport operator SMRT, staged the strike on Monday and Tuesday over a salary dispute and to demand better working conditions. Their work permits had been revoked ahead of their deportation.

"The Ministry of Home Affairs confirms that all 29 former SMRT bus drivers have been repatriated to their home country," the ministry said in a statement.

"They were cooperative and the process took place without incident," it said, adding that Chinese embassy officials and SMRT staff assisted in the repatriation.

Four other drivers were charged in court and authorities said they would lodge charges against a fifth on Monday for their involvement in the work stoppage which the government ruled was illegal.

If found guilty, they could be jailed for up to a year, fined a maximum of Sg$2,000 ($1,640) -- the equivalent of two months' wages -- or both.

The strike, the first since 1986 and which caught the government by surprise, has highlighted tightly-controlled Singapore's heavy dependency on migrant labour to drive its economic growth amid a labour shortage resulting from falling birth rates.

(NSI News Source Info) SINGAPORE - December 2, 2012: Almost 2 years back, DTN News issued a special report image captioned "Taliban On The Offensive December 25, 2010".The ground reality has worsened in Afghanistan with increase in causality of Afghan and ISAF forces nearing the withdrawal date of 2014 for foreign security elements.

Why are the Taliban on the offensive? The reply is straightforward, President Obama’s Afghan strategy is not working. The Taliban are gaining confidence from increased news coverage and political strength from Iran and other elements, who are supposed to be fighting along side the NATO ISAF coalition forces against insurgency. On December 25, 2010, the Taliban are on the offensive attacking NATO ISAF troops with rockets from safe distance near Pakistan border.

Taliban insurgents launched a major suicide attack Sunday against a NATO base at an Afghan city airport, killing five people and wounding several foreign troops, officials said.

Nine attackers were also killed, some blowing themselves up in two vehicles at the perimeter gate of the Jalalabad airport and others shot as they attempted to storm the base, police said.

DTN News - CHINA DEFENSE NEWS: China's New Fighter Jet J-15 Has Range of 3,000 Km

DTN News - CHINA DEFENSE NEWS: China's New Fighter Jet J-15 Has Range of 3,000 Km

(NSI News Source Info) SINGAPORE - November 30, 2012: Chinese fighter jet J-15, which successfully landed on the country's first aircraft carrier, has a range of about 3,000 km without refueling and strong sea-air combat capability, said an official.

Zhang Junshe, deputy director of the country's Naval Military Studies Research Institute, told that the successful takeoff and landing of the J-15 is a clear sign of an increase in the fighting capacity of the aircraft carrier. Carrier-based aircraft is an important symbol of the fighting capacity of an aircraft carrier, he said.

Zhang said the J-15 is China's first generation of independently developed carrier-based aircraft. It is a third-generation fighter with strong sea-air combat capability and supersonic speeds. It can carry multiple types of long-range anti-ship and air-to-air missiles.

The J-15 has a range of about 3,000 km without refueling, and thus has strong long-range combat capability, said the media report. After the successful takeoff and landing of the carrier-based aircraft, the navy will now test other components of the carrier battle group.

DTN News - ISRAELI DEFENSE NEWS: Israeli Defense Chief Sounds Ready To Hit Iran, Thanks In Part To Iron Dome

DTN News - ISRAELI DEFENSE NEWS: Israeli Defense Chief Sounds Ready To Hit Iran, Thanks In Part To Iron Dome

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - November 30, 2012: Israel’s retiring defense chief thinks Iran needs to be “coerced” in 2013 from building an atom bomb, despite any U.S. hopes that sanctions will bring Tehran to the negotiating table. And the recent success of his new, U.S.-funded missile defenses seems to have convinced him that Israel is better able than ever to deter its Iran-backed foes.

“Of course, we would love to see some heavenly intervention that will stop them, to wake up some morning and learn that they’ve given up on their nuclear intentions,” Barak told reporters at the Pentagon Thursday during a joint press conference with Leon Panetta, his American counterpart. “You cannot build a strategy based on these wishes or prayers. Sanctions are working and they are more hurting than anything I remember from the past vis-a-vis Iran, but I don’t believe these kinds of sanctions will bring the ayatollahs to a moment of truth where they sit around a table, look into each other’s eyes and decide that the game is over.”

Not exactly what Panetta wanted to hear during what was supposed to be a friendly press conference in which they celebrated how the U.S.-backed Iron Dome rocket defense system stopped Hamas’ rocket attacks cold. The U.S. defense chief, who effused over the retiring Barak as “a man of peace” and praised their long friendship, said the “unprecedented pressure” on Iran from international sanctions present “time and space for an effort to try to achieve a diplomatic solution.”
