(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - October 27, 2012: A Florida doctor claimed on Oct. 19 that Cuban strongman Fidel Castro had suffered a massive stroke that left him unable to speak, recognize anyone or fend for himself.

As rumors gain strength that the reclusive leader may be on death’s door, we look back to an earlier era - before the Cuban Missle Crisis - when he toured New York City as a young man.

He came, he saw, he conquered. In 1959, Fidel Castro came to New York, hired a public relations firm, ate hot dogs, kissed ladies like a rock star, and held babies like a politician.

Loved by some, hated by others, his trips to the Big Apple were galvanizing.
Take a stroll through the News' archives ... Here, Gladys Feijoo, 19-year-old Miss La Prensa of 1959, kisses Fidel Castro as he signs his autograph for her collection on April 22, 1959.

DTN News - GEORGIA DEFENSE NEWS: How Russia And Georgia Started A Drone Arms Race

DTN News - GEORGIA DEFENSE NEWS: How Russia And Georgia Started A Drone Arms Race

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - October 26, 2012: On the night of August 7, 2008, (TBILISI, Georgia) what military experts and historians say is the world’s first two-sided drone war began.

Georgia, convinced Russia was about to annex its separatist region of South Ossetia, made the first move by bombarding and then invading the separatist capital, Tskhinvali.

What followed was a destructive five-day war that was to a great extent provoked and fought by drones, waking Russia up to the strategic importance of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology.

The Georgian government lost control over South Ossetia and Abkhazia in the country’s chaotic first years of independence after the Soviet Union fell in 1991.

Four months before the war, as peace talks stalled between Georgia and the de facto governments of its breakaway territories of South Ossetia and Abkhazia the Georgian government began conducting reconnaissance flights over the conflict regions using medium-sized Hermes-450 drones it had purchased from Israel.

Moscow and Georgia’s capital of Tbilisi have frequently clashed over Georgia’s aspirations to join NATO as well as Russia’s increasing support to Georgian separatists, but the conflict intensified as the drones started to go down.

Three to seven Georgian drones were shot down over Abkhazia in April and May 2008. Each side offered conflicting information on the number of incidents and aircraft involved.

DTN News - DEFENSE NEWS: Sikorsky To Build Superfast, Military-Grade S-97 RAIDER™ Helicopter

DTN News - DEFENSE NEWS: Sikorsky To Build Superfast, Military-Grade S-97 RAIDER™ Helicopter

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - October 26, 2012: In 2009 Sikorsky Aircraft built the world’s fastest helicopter, the X2, which clocked in at nearly 287 miles per hour and earned a PM Breakthrough Award to boot. Since then, the company has been incorporating the technology into designs for a new helo—the Raider S-97—which it plans to offer it to the U.S. Army in 2015.

Like the X2 Demonstrator, the S-97 will use a coaxial rotor system. Its two rotors spin in opposite directions to stabilize the helicopter at high speeds, allowing it travel twice as fast as conventional helos. The S-97 will be twice as large as the X2, weighing in at 11,000 pounds, and capable of climbing up to 10,000 feet.

Sikorsky spokesperson Frans Jurgens told PM the S-97 would be able to hover with its nose pointed high or low without sliding backward or forward. "So it will have the ability to pirouette while keeping guns on-target," Jurgens says. "These are the kinds of maneuvers that only the X2 aircraft can achieve." The company plans to build the first two S-97 prototypes next summer and expects to get them off the ground beginning in late 2014.

DTN News - CHINA DEFENSE NEWS: China Has A Daring And Prudent Plan

DTN News - CHINA DEFENSE NEWS: China Has A Daring And Prudent Plan

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - October 25, 2012: Earlier this year pictures came out of China showing yet another stealth fighter prototype. This one is called the J-31 “Falcon Eagle” (from an inscription on the tail), and while it looks like the American F-22, it’s also smaller than China’s other stealth fighter (the J-20, which has already flown).

The J-31 was built by the Shenyang Aircraft Corporation (which makes the J-11, the illegal Chinese copy of the Russian Su-27). The J-31 has some characteristics of the F-35 as well but appears more an attempt to match the F-22. It’s possible that the F-31 was a competing (with the J-20) design that lost out. That’s because the J-31 has not flown yet. Whatever the case, the J-31 is further evidence that China is determined to develop its own high tech military gear.

While China is eager to develop advanced military technology locally, it recognizes that this takes time and more effort than nations new to this expect. Thus China is trying to avoid the mistakes Russia made in this area, and having competing designs and developing necessary supporting industries is part of that. All this takes a lot of time and involves lots of little (and some major) failures. The Chinese are doing it right and are willing to wait until they get military tech that is truly world class.

DTN News - MAURITANIA DEFENSE NEWS: Mauritania Receives Brazilian-Made Super Tucano Jet Fighter

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - October 25, 2012: Mauritanian Air Force has received its first Brazilian-made Super Tucano jet fighter under a military deal passed last march with the aircraft manufacturer Embraer, without saying how many planes will be delivered to the African nation.

However, some foreign diplomatic and intelligence sources say that Mauritania will be supplied at least three EMB-314 Super Tucano light military planes which can be used for pilot training, reconnaissance, internal security, border patrol and counter-terrorism and anti-narcotics trafficking missions.

Equipped with an advanced laser inertial navigation and attack system, a GPS and a traffic alerting and collision avoidance system (TCAS), the Super Tucano has an integrated advanced weapon system. This includes  a centerline hard-point for air-to-surface weapons beneath the fuselage, besides wing-embedded cannons.

The aircraft also includes the Safire thermal imaging system from FLIR, which allows the aircraft to carry out night surveillance and attack missions. Powered by a PT6A-68A turboprop engine developing 969kW, the aircraft can fly at a maximum speed of 560km/h. It is also capable of operating from remote bases and unpaved runways.

DTN News - DEFENSE NEWS: Israel, US Start Largest Ever Air Defense Exercise

DTN News - DEFENSE NEWS: Israel, US Start Largest Ever Air Defense Exercise

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - October 24, 2012: The Israeli and United States armed forces started their largest-ever joint air defense and anti-missile exercise on Sunday, involving thousands of service personnel and the two nation's principal air defense missile systems, the Israeli Army told RIA Novosti.

The Austere Challenge exercises, taking place in Israel and the neighboring waters, involve 3,500 Americans and over 1,000 Israelis. Preparations for the war games have taken two years and "are in no way connected to current events taking place in the Middle East," the two allies say.

The US forces will test their Patriot ground-based and naval Aegis air defense systems, while Israel will test its Hetz-2 (Arrow) missile, which, like Patriot, is designed to intercept ballistic missiles. Israel will also test its Iron Dome system which is designed to take on the short-range rockets which are regularly fired into Israel from Gaza.

Most of the exercise will consist of command and control drills in a simulated environment but will include some live firing. The exercise has cost the US $30 million and Israel $8 million.

DTN News - SPECIAL REPORT: Germany Warns UK Against EU Budget Veto

DTN News - SPECIAL REPORT: Germany Warns UK Against EU Budget Veto

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - October 22, 2012: Germany is warning Britain that its threat to veto the European Union’s new budget will force Berlin to cancel next month’s EU budget summit.

British Prime Minister David Cameron has threatened to veto any agreement on the EU’s new seven-year budget other than a complete spending freeze.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has reportedly decided that holding talks on the 2014-2020 budget while Britain is almost certain to veto it is pointless, The Financial Times reported.

A veto will further outrage EU members after Cameron also vetoed an EU-wide financial agreement to help the eurozone crisis back in December and forced the other 26 nations to sign the pact without Britain.
