DTN News - DEFENSE NEWS: Boeing To Provide Performance-Based Logistics For CH-47 Chinook Helicopters

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - October 5, 2012: The U.S. Army has awarded Boeing [NYSE: BA] a five-year Performance-Based Logistics (PBL) contract for CH-47 Chinook support, an arrangement that reduces customer costs while allowing Boeing to invest in improving products and processes.

The $185 million contract covers management of the production, overhaul and distribution of the Army's supply of Chinook helicopter rotor blades.

"PBLs are outcome-focused sustainment contracts that guarantee enhanced performance and improved costs," said Peri Widener, Rotorcraft Support vice president for Boeing. "We work with our customer to reduce costs through longer-term agreements, purchasing only the parts needed and investing in techniques that extend the life of key components."

Under a PBL contract, the customer pays for a support package with an agreed-to level of readiness, unlike traditional contracts based on payment for specific parts and services.

DTN News - POLAND DEFENSE NEWS: Poland Ups Military Helicopter Contest To 70 Aircraft

DTN News - POLAND DEFENSE NEWS: Poland Ups Military Helicopter Contest To 70 Aircraft

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - October 3, 2012: NATO-member Poland is in the market for 70 new military helicopters, more than double the number it first sought in March, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Wednesday.

"We're determined to speed up and expand our helicopter plans with the immediate decision to buy 70 helicopters for the Polish army," the PAP news agency quoted Tusk as saying.
Delivery of the first choppers is expected by 2014, he said, describing the cost of the project as "gigantic", but declining to name a figure.

In March, Warsaw announced a tender to buy 26 multipurpose helicopters for its army worth an estimated 1.5-3.0 billion zlotys (360-720 million euros, $480-960 million).
The move is seen as a significant step in the Polish army's drive to replace 250 Soviet-era helicopters in the years to come.

DTN News - FRENCH DEFENSE NEWS: First Rafale With Active Antenna Radar Join French Air Force

DTN News - FRENCH DEFENSE NEWS: First Rafale With Active Antenna Radar Join French Air Force

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - October 3, 2012: The Dassault Rafale is a French twin-engine delta-wing fighter aircraft designed and built by Dassault Aviation. Dassault described the Rafale as being an omnirole fighter with semi-stealth capabilities. The Rafale is a multirole combat aircraft; capable of simultaneously undertaking air supremacy, interdiction, reconnaissance, and the airborne nuclear deterrent missions.

In the late 1970s, the French Air Force and Navy were seeking to replace and consolidate their current fleets of aircraft. In order to reduce development costs and boost prospective sales, France entered into an arrangement with four other European nations to produce an agile aerial fighter, but subsequent disagreements over workshare and differing requirements led to France pursuing their own development program. Dassault built a technology demonstrator which first flew in July 1986, however post-Cold War budget cuts and changes in priorities contributed to significant delays.

Introduced in 2000, the Rafale is being produced for both the French Air Force and for carrier-based operations in the French Navy. It has also been marketed for export to several countries, including selection by the Indian Air Force. The Rafale has been used in combat over Afghanistan and Libya; features such as the SPECTRA integrated defensive aids system have been crucial advantages in these theatres. Several upgrades to the radar, engines, and avionics of the Rafale are planned to be introduced in the near-future.

DTN News - JAPAN / CHINA NEWS: Geopolitics, Resources Put Maritime Disputes Back On Map

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - October 1, 2012:  Small and occupied largely by seabirds, goats and a unique indigenous species of mole, the islands named Senaku by Japan and Diaoyu by China have long been largely ignored.

But as rising powers face off against each other in a battle not just for influence but also vital resources, such disputed islets, reefs, and areas of seabed are swiftly growing in importance; and not just in Asia.

From the melting and resource-rich Arctic to the eastern Mediterranean, the South Atlantic to the East China Sea, legal wrangling, diplomatic posturing and military saber rattling are all on the rise.

The current row between Beijing and Tokyo over five islets and three rocks seems one of the riskiest so far, putting two of Asia's most powerful states at loggerheads - although most experts believe talk of outright war is overstated for now.
