DTN News: India Military Ties On Track Despite Visa Row According To China....NSI News Source Info # 1051

(NSI News Source Info) BEIJING, China - August 28, 2010: China said on Saturday that military ties with India remained on track, despite a visa row that some reports said led to a freeze in defence contacts between the two big neighbours with sometimes testy relations.
An Indian defence source and some Indian news media said on Friday that defence ties with China were suspended after Beijing refused a visa to an Indian general from disputed Kashmir, where Pakistan and China also hold territory. But the Indian Defence Minister A.K. Antony said "ties with China will continue", and now China's Ministry of Defence has also denied any freeze in ties with the Indian military.
"China has not suspended military exchanges with India, and nor has it received any notification from India of any such suspension," the press office of the Chinese ministry said in a statement faxed to Reuters.
India and China have limited military ties, focused on visits by military chiefs and defence officials and occasional, small joint exercises.

DTN News: Afghanistan TODAY August 28, 2010 - Taliban Fighters, Some Disguised As American soldiers, Attack Two U.S. Bases.NSI News Source Info # 1050

(NSI News Source Info) KABUL, Afghanistan - August 28, 2010: Insurgents disguised as American soldiers attacked two U.S. bases in eastern Afghanistan on Saturday morning and managed to breach the perimeter of one of them before being repelled, according to NATO and Afghan officials.
The assault began at about 4 a.m., when dozens of Taliban fighters, some wearing U.S. military uniforms, launched simultaneous attacks on Forward Operating Base Salerno, in Khost province, and nearby Forward Operating Base Chapman, where a suicide bomber killed seven CIA employees in December. They fired mortars or rockets, along with grenades and guns, and two insurgents entered FOB Salerno by cutting a hole in a fence, NATO officials said. No Afghan or U.S. troops died in the assault, but four NATO troops and an Afghan policeman were wounded, and a 12-year-old Afghan boy was killed, according to Gen. Abdul Hakim Ishaqzai, the police chief in Khost.
The response to the attack was swift and deadly. Afghan security forces, along with U.S. troops, killed about 15 insurgents at FOB Salerno and six more at FOB Chapman, while three others were killed by an airstrike after they were spotted fleeing the scene of the attacks, NATO said.
The attacks appeared to have been orchestrated by the Haqqani network, one of the most lethal Taliban factions, led by commander Sirajuddin Haqqani. His fighters operate primarily in eastern Afghanistan and have been responsible for violent attacks inside Kabul. NATO said a Haqqani network fighter named Mudasir was one of those killed in the assault on the bases.
Insurgents have laid siege to other heavily fortified U.S. bases this year, such as Kandahar Airfield and Bagram Air Base. But such attacks are rare, and insurgents generally fail to cause significant damage to the installations.

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - August 25, 2010: Asif Ali Zardari, President of Pakistan acknowledged that no relationship between two sovereign states is as unique and durable as that between Pakistan and China.
Pakistan China relations started from 1950 when the former broke diplomatic ties with Republic of China and recognized Peoples Republic of China. With the passage of time relations between both the countries strengthened as they have India as a common enemy. Both the countries support each other on international issues too. China supports Pakistan on Kashmir issue while the later supports China on Tibet, Taiwan and Xinjiang issues.
Hussain Haqqani a senior Pakistani diplomat pointed out that “For China, Pakistan is a low cost secondary deterrent to India while for Pakistan, China is a high value guarantor of security against India.”
China also favours tension between India and Pakistan, as in this way India remains busy in South Asia region and it could not challenge China in international arena.

DTN News: Israeli-Palestinian Peace Talks, Again....NSI News Source Info # 1020

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - August 24, 2010: The Israeli government and the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) have agreed to engage in direct peace talks Sept. 2 in Washington. Neither side has expressed any enthusiasm about the talks. In part, this comes from the fact that entering any negotiations with enthusiasm weakens your bargaining position. But the deeper reason is simply that there have been so many peace talks between the two sides and so many failures that it is difficult for a rational person to see much hope in them. Moreover, the failures have not occurred for trivial reasons. They have occurred because of profound divergences in the interests and outlooks of each side.
These particular talks are further flawed because of their origin. Neither side was eager for the talks. They are taking place because the United States wanted them. Indeed, in a certain sense, both sides are talking because they do not want to alienate the United States and because it is easier to talk and fail than it is to refuse to talk.
