That's how deeply the once-in-a-century bonanza accruing to us from the rise of China, India and other Asian nations is now etched into Australian folklore.

But we hear much less about another important spin-off of Asia's growth miracle: the regional arms build-up. Just as the global economic balance has shifted towards Asia, so has the military balance.

The new policy unveiled on June 16 designates certain locations "hot spots," where the annual radiation doses could exceed 20 millisieverts, as areas for recommended evacuation. Since the new policy is nonbinding, those who want to continue to live in their current residences can do so, while others who wish to move out will be provided with government support on a household basis.

Asia News Report: China Nuclear Safety Checks To Run Until October....NSI News Source Info # 2094

AFP NewsJun 17, 2011: China has finished inspecting nuclear reactors operating around the country and will complete checks on more than two dozen still under construction by October, the environment ministry has said. The nationwide assessment of the country's nuclear facilities was launched in April after a devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan triggered an atomic crisis -- and sparked a worldwide rethink on atomic power.

"The consequence of (the Japanese) incident is very serious and the lesson is very profound," Vice Minister Li Ganjie said in state-media report posted on the environmental protection ministry's website this week.

While Li did not announce the results of the inspection, he told reporters on June 3 that "safety conditions ... are good".

Li stressed China was moving as quickly as the United States and European countries in inspecting its facilities.

"China is also stepping up work on a nuclear safety plan. Until the plan is approved, the Chinese government will suspend approval of new nuclear plants," Li said.

SingaporeSceneFri, Jun 17, 2011: Are Singaporeans the most "disgusting and "irritating" bunch of people around?

Well, users of one blog in Chinese seem to think so.

The blog 'Lion City Life', which is supposedly frequented by foreign nationals from China based in Singapore, had conducted a poll seeking feedback from respondents on the most "disgusting and "irritating" people.

Believed to be a poll starter, a person with the moniker of "sayangweiwei" had asked in Chinese, "Having been in Singapore, all must have met people from other countries. Which country's people are the most disgusting and irritating?"

Eight choices were provided, namely: Singaporean, Filipino, Malays, Malaysian, Japanese, Chinese (China), Korean and Indian.

According to socio-political website Temasek Review, the results as reflected on Thursday showed that Singaporeans were voted as the most "disgusting and irritating" people with 48.15 percent of the votes, followed by Filipinos and Malays who garnered 7.41 percent and 5.94 percent of the votes, respectively.

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - June 17, 2011: Weeks after the death of Osama bin Laden, U.S. officials are continuing to press Pakistan to do more against militancy, with few visible results as bilateral tensions continue to intensify.
Since the top-secret raid that killed the al Qaeda leader near Islamabad last month, Washington has sent a host of top officials, including CIA chief Leon Panetta and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, to call in Islamabad, ramping up pressure on an already strained alliance.

Analysts say Washington may be seeking to goad Pakistan into assaulting militant havens in North Waziristan or into going after bomb-making factories believed to be fueling violence in neighboring Afghanistan.

Officials in Pakistan, facing intense public pressure over the unilateral raid, have pushed back by throwing out U.S. military trainers and warning that scoldings from Washington may send it into China's open arms.

He said his father would be ready to cede power if he lost the election, though he would not go into exile.

But Prime Minister Al-Baghdadi Ali Al-Mahmoudi appeared to throw the potential concession into question, saying on Thursday that the leader of the revolution was not concerned by "any referendum."

A visiting Russian envoy said the Libyan leadership had reiterated that Gaddafi's departure was a "red line."

Taiwan is the first export customer for the Block III. The system will be almost identical to the U.S. Army system, with some national modifications, says U.S. Army project manager Col. Shane Openshaw.

The Congressional notification of the potential deal went to the U.S. Congress in 2008, so it is not a total surprise Taiwan will get the attack helicopter. But until today, there has been scant word since then that the deal has gone forward.

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - June 12, 2011:
Syrian soldiers were told to fire indiscriminately at civilians and raped Syrian women in front of their husbands, reports emerged Sunday morning quoting army defectors who fled to Turkey.
Four soldiers told AFP of instances of rape and murder as Syrian President Bashar Assad‘s forces crack down on anti-regime demonstrations throughout the country forcing thousands of civilians to escape to Turkey.

One soldier said the “cleansing” in Rastan in Homs caused him to defect. “We were told that people were armed there. But when we arrived, we saw that they were ordinary civilians. We were ordered to shoot them,” he said.

“When we entered the houses, we opened fire on everyone, the young, the old… Women were raped in front of their husbands and children,” he said, predicting that there were some 700 deaths, although this has not been verified.

Another soldier, Khalaf, told AFP that in a town near the Turkish border, “a professional soldier pulled out his knife and stabbed a civilian in the head, for no reason.”

(NSI News Source Info) HANOI, Vietnam - June 12, 2011: Hundreds of Vietnamese staged an anti-China protest Sunday for the second week in a row, a day ahead of the country's planned live ammunition naval drill amid a heated spat over territory in the South China Sea.
Waving Vietnamese flags and signs reading "Stop Violating Vietnam's Territory," a couple hundred demonstrators moved from the Chinese Embassy through the capital's streets surrounded by dozens of police and security forces. Hundreds more also protested in southern Ho Chi Minh City.

Protests are rare in Communist-run Vietnam and are typically quashed quickly by police.
