DTN News - DEFENSE NEWS: India-Built Sub-Assembly On US Navy's Combat Planes

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - June 1, 2012:  An India-built electronic sub-assembly will be part of the US Navy's combat planes, a statement said Wednesday as Indian companies step up efforts to be part of the global defence supply chain.

The sub-assembly provides the cockpit flood lighting compatible with the aircraft's night vision imaging system (NVIS).

American aerospace major Boeing has delivered the first EA-18G Growler aircraft fitted with a cockpit sub-assembly produced by Indian public sector defence electronics major Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) to the US Navy on May 3, a statement from the firm said.

Boeing has also extended a contract signed with BEL for another year for supplying the sub-assembly for Boeing military planes.

Boeing had awarded BEL an initial contract in March 2011 for work on F/A-18 Super Hornet combat plane cockpit sub-assemblies.

That contract included options to renew annually for up to four years. "As a result of BEL's demonstrated performance, Boeing recently exercised an option to renew the contract for another year," it said.

DTN News - ITALIAN DEFENSE NEWS:  Obama Set To Arm Italy's Drones In Milestone Move

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - May 31, 2012: President Barack Obama's administration appears set to notify the U.S. Congress of plans to arm a fleet of Italian MQ-9 Reaper drones, a step that may spur a wider spread of remotely piloted hunter-killer aircraft.

The administration could move ahead within two weeks on the proposal to let Italy join Britain in deploying U.S. drones with weapons such as laser-guided bombs and Hellfire missiles, American officials said.

Italy has a fleet of six Reapers. The sale of the technology to arm them, including bomb racks and "weaponization" kits costing up to $17 million, would help the United States redistribute the burden of its global military operations as the Pentagon's budget is being squeezed by deficit-reduction requirements.

Aides to Obama have been informally consulting the House of Representatives' and Senate's foreign affairs committees about the proposed sale to Italy since last year, congressional staff said.

DTN News - AFGHAN WAR NEWS: Marjana Simonovska Member Of Scorpions Special Unit In Macedonia's army Part Of NATO Mission Serving In Afghanistan

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - May 30, 2012: Marjana Simonovska stands at a NATO base in Kabul January 19, 2012. Simonovska is a senior sergeant in Macedonia's army and a member of the Scorpions special unit, who spent six months this year serving in Afghanistan as part of the NATO mission. Married with two children, she was part of an operation to secure the alliance's main headquarters in Kabul together with the other 177 Macedonian soldiers serving under NATO.

Macedonia, a landlocked country with population of 2 million, is a NATO candidate country, but has failed to join the alliance due to Greek objections over the country's name. Burdened by ethnic tensions, frustrations in the small Balkan country are rising over widespread poverty and the slow pace of integration in the European Union and NATO. Greek objections derailed the former Yugoslav republic's bid to join NATO in 2008, and no progress was made during a summit of the Western alliance in Chicago early this week. (NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - May 28, 2012: U.S. President Barack Obama speaks to family members of military personel at the Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day on May 28, 2012 in Arlington, VA.

Five hundred military children and teens, many of whom had a parent that was killed in the Afghan and Iraq wars, attended the annual four-day 'Good Grief Camp' in Arlington, VA and Washington, DC, which is run by TAPS (Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors).

The camp helped them learn coping skills and build relationships so they know they are not alone in the grief of their loved one.

They met others of their own age group, learned together and shared their feelings, both through group activities and one-on-one mentors, who are all active duty or former military servicemembers. Some 1,200 adults, most of whom are grieving parents and spouses, also attend the National Military Survival Seminar held concurrently with the children's camp.

The TAPS slogan is 'Remember the Love. Celebrate the Life. Share the Journey.'

DTN News - AIRLINES NEWS: Australia-Europe Non-Stop Flights Promised By Long-Range Aircraft, But Airlines Don't See Demand

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - May 28, 2012: The Australian market continues to be excited by the prospect of non-stop flights between Australia and Europe as new technology aircraft arrive, but the reality is their excitement does not convert into sustainable yields, making it unlikely in the foreseeable future for such flights to be operated.

Stiff competition – European carriers have pulled out while British Airways (BA) and Qantas whittle their presence – has reduced the route to one that is fought on cost, where intermediate Asian and Middle East network carriers have an advantage. Geography also poses disadvantages: an ultra long-haul route to asingle European point would still require onward European connections, diminishing much of the advantage of the non-stop service. And while arguments continue about whether Qantas should have ordered Boeing777s instead of 787s, the reality is that the 777 would probably have been of little help in Qantas' current position.
