DTN News - SPACE TECH NEWS: Yearlong Star Eclipse May Help Solve Space Mystery....NSI News Source Info # 2229

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - July 16, 2011: While relatively few people were looking, an unusual eclipse darkened New Year's Day.

On January 1 a giant space object blotted out our view of Epsilon Aurigae, a yellow supergiant star about 2,000 light-years from Earth. Based on studies of Epsilon Aurigae's previous eclipses, astronomers expect the star won't fully regain its bright shine until early 2011.

Normally the star is so bright it can be seen with the naked eye even by city dwellers. For all but the most rural star-gazers, though, the mystery object that eclipses the star causes it to vanish for about 18 months every 27.1 years.

Ever since the star's periodic eclipses were first recorded in 1821, astronomers have been puzzling over how Epsilon Aurigae pulls off its lengthy disappearing act.

Now, "using data from the Spitzer Space Telescope, we've reached a solution to a nearly two-century-old mystery," study leader Don Hoard, of the California Institute of Technology, said today at an American Astronomical Society press briefing in Washington, D.C.

According to the new model, Epsilon Aurigae is a dying star being orbited by another star, and that stellar dance partner is cloaked in a wide disk of dark dust.

Based on the new Spitzer data, Hoard's team thinks the eclipse lasts so long because the dark disk is about 744,000,000 miles (1,197,351,936 kilometers) across—eight times as wide as the distance from Earth to the sun. (National Geographic)

DTN News - U.S. FINANCIAL CRISIS: Latest Debt Talks End With No Deal - Obama Sets News Conference....NSI News Source Info # 2224

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - July 14, 2011: A fifth meeting in five days involving President Barack Obama and top congressional leaders failed to achieve a breakthrough and no talks were planned for Friday, which the White House had called a deadline for deciding the way forward.

Obama will hold a news conference at 11 a.m. Friday to discuss efforts to reach a deal on the debt ceiling and budget cuts, according to a senior administration official.

A Republican aide familiar with Thursday's meeting at the White House said Obama told congressional leaders he expected them to find agreement over the next 24 to 36 hours on the path forward.

If the group is unable to reach a compromise, the president suggested another meeting would be called this weekend. Obama said he and his staff would be "on call" during this time, according to the aide.

According to a source familiar with the debt conversations, who spoke on condition of not being identified, there will be no meeting Friday. There was no word on when the direct negotiations would resume.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell called Thursday's 80-minute session a good meeting and said, "We'll continue to discuss a way forward over the next couple of days and see what happens."

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Virginia, who had a tense exchange with Obama during Wednesday evening's meeting, said nothing at Thursday's talks, a Democratic aide said.

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - July 14, 2011: Boeing [NYSE: BA] announced today that the second of 12 GPS IIF satellites it is building for the U.S. Air Force has successfully completed prelaunch testing. GPS IIF-2 is ready for launch on July 15 aboard a United Launch Alliance Delta IV vehicle from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

"Nearly every piece of military equipment uses GPS precision timing and navigation capabilities to perform its missions more safely and effectively," said Air Force Col. Bernard Gruber, director of the GPS Directorate. "Because of the GPS IIF satellites and stewardship of the entire GPS constellation, performance will be improved, resulting in continuing mission success."

GPS is a space-based, worldwide navigation system providing users with highly accurate, three-dimensional position, velocity and timing information 24 hours a day in all weather conditions. The GPS IIF satellites' new and enhanced capabilities include improved anti-jam performance for warfighters and improved security for all users.

DTN News - AFGHAN WAR NEWS: First Batch Of 1,000 U.S. Soldiers Leave From Bagram Air Base In Afghan Drawdown....NSI News Source Info # 2222

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada / BAGRAM AIR FIELD, Afghanistan - July 14, 2011: The first troops to leave Afghanistan as part of the U.S. drawdown handed over their slice of battlefield yesterday to a unit less than half their size and started packing for home.
When the 650 members of the Iowa National Guard’s 1st Squadron, 113th Cavalry Regiment arrived in Afghanistan in November 2010, bases didn’t have enough housing, translators were in short supply and chow halls were packed. Commanders were using a buildup of 33,000 extra troops for a major push that they said would turn the tide of the war against the Taliban insurgency.

Nine months later, it’s unclear whether that push has succeeded, but the pullback has begun. Although major combat units are not expected to start leaving until late fall, two National Guard regiments totaling about 1,000 soldiers are withdrawing this month: the Iowa soldiers from Parwan province in eastern Afghanistan, and the other group from the capital, Kabul.

Despite the unexpected setback on Wednesday, when their undermanned posts were caught by surprise by regime troops, morale was high enough to fight back immediately.

Hundreds of young men piled into pickup trucks bound for the front line, many dressed in T-shirts and flip-flops. Most were fighters from local villages, a mixture of Berbers, who are generally fiercely anti-Gaddafi, and Arab tribes.

"All the military heads from the different villages are here – from Kikla, Zintan, Jadu, Rojban," said one fighter, Osama Azumi, who came to the front line in his taxi. "We are just waiting for the order to attack."

Prithviraj Chavan, Maharashtra state's chief minister, said it was too early to talk about suspects but at least one of the apparently coordinated blasts was "quite powerful." He warned the death toll could rise.

Indian Home Minister P. Chidambaram called the explosions a "coordinated attack by terrorists" and appealed for calm as Mumbai residents voiced anger at the government because their city has been a repeated target for terror.

"The entire city of Mumbai has been placed on high alert," said Chidambaram, who inspected the sites late Wednesday and early Thursday. "I would appeal to the people of Mumbai to remain calm and maintain the peace."

DTN News - PAKISTAN NEWS: Musharraf Able Influence US To Resume Aid, Would Be His Return Ticket To Pakistan....NSI News Source Info # 2214

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - July 13, 2011: Former president Pervez Musharraf has warned of dire consequences from the recent US decision to suspend $800 million of military aid to Pakistan, saying the move was not in the best interest of the two countries.

“Certainly it will be disastrous,” Musharraf said during a speech at Rice University in Houston, Texas, on Monday evening, according to media reports. “It is not in the best interest of Pakistan but also not in the best interest of the United States. If Pakistan is weakened how do we fight terrorism?”

“We are weakening the country and the Army,” Musharraf said at the university’s Baker Institute of Public Policy. “It will have a negative effect certainly on the Pakistan Army, on its capability to fight terrorism.”

Musharraf said he was saddened by the ‘present environment of confrontation almost between Pakistan and the United States, between the two armies, the two intelligence services’. “It saddens me because I remember when there was trust,” he said, pointing to what he said were his strong relationships with President George W Bush and then-Secretary of State Colin Powell. “I could pick up the phone,” he said. “The line was always open. I wonder now if that degree of communication exists.” He said there was a ‘trust deficit’ and a ‘confidence deficit’ between the countries and the restoration of better relations depended on leadership and straight talk.

DTN News - INDIA NEWS: Kerala Temple’s Secret Vaults Yield $22 Billion In Treasure ~ Debate Over Ownership....NSI News Source Info # 2209

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - July 11, 2011: A $22 billion treasure trove unearthed beneath Kerala’s Padmanabhaswamy Temple has sparked a fierce political and public debate over ownership and how best to put the vast wealth to use.

The vaults of the 16th century temple were prised open for the first time in June, since when public calls have grown for redistribution of the wealth to the poor.

Discovered in the vaults were a dazzling stash of gold ornaments, Napoleonic era coins and sacks of gemstones.

The archaeological find, one of the greatest ever made in India, has triggered a fierce legal battle for custodianship, pitting the royal family of Travancore, which controls the temple, against the Kerala High Court that has asked the state government to bring the temple under a public trust.

The current maharajah of the royal family, Marthanda Verma, has since challenged the court ruling in the Supreme Court, with the backing of some state politicians.

"The Supreme Court has stayed a Kerala High Court ruling asking the state government to take over the temple. We will go by the direction," Temple Affairs Minister V. S. Sivakumar said on Sunday.

While the royal family's guardianship of the temple's wealth over close to three centuries has drawn plaudits, critics say the fortune could go far to stimulate Kerala's local economy and improve living standards in a country with an estimated 450 million people living in poverty.

"The royal family had a great tradition of being progressive and it had been an integral part of the history and traditions of the temple. It would not be right to deny them any role in the temple's affairs," said Ramesh Chennithala, chief of the Kerala unit of the ruling Congress party.

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada / GENEVA, Switzerland - July 11, 2011: Casualties from violence across Pakistan since the U.S. killing of Osama bin Laden in May have soared, with many more maimed and injured people going to humanitarian clinics, the ICRC said on Monday.

Pascal Cuttat, outgoing head of operations in the country for the Swiss-based International Committee of the Red Cross, told reporters another effect of bin Laden's death was an increased suspicion of foreigners, including aid workers.

"Violence has increased considerably since bin Laden was killed, and has spread into urban areas," said Cuttat. "We are seeing increasing numbers coming into our medical and orthopedic centers, more than we have seen for many years.

The al Qaeda leader was shot in May by U.S. Navy Seals who landed by helicopter at his secret compound in Abbotabad, north of Karachi.
