DTN News - WORLD OF TODAY: Major Winter Storm Blasts Toronto - February 8, 2013

DTN News - WORLD OF TODAY: Major Winter Storm Blasts Toronto - February 8, 2013

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - February 8, 2013: DTN News reports a blast of winter weather slowed morning commuting throughout the Greater Toronto Area Friday morning and conditions are going to be worse for the journey home.

OPP are urging motorists to stay off the roads as a mammoth winter storm continues to batter the region. About 19 centimetres of snow has fallen at Pearson International Airport since Thursday night with another 2 to 5 centimetres still in the forecast.

Heavy snow continues as a major winter storm currently centred over New York State affects the regions today. General total snowfall amounts of 20 to 30 centimetres are expected with snowfall rates of 2 to 4 cm per hour possible under the heaviest bands. Strong and gusty northeasterly winds are blowing the freshly fallen snow and resulting in very low visibility at times.

The snow has already begun to taper off over Southwestern Ontario and is expected to ease off over South Central Ontario this evening and Eastern Ontario near midnight.

Hazardous winter travelling conditions from near zero visibility, areas of heavy snow and local blowing snow are expected. Rapidly accumulating snow will also contribute to dangerous driving conditions. Travel plans should be changed accordingly.

The storm centre will move away tonight and merge with another winter storm forecast to affect parts of New England and the Maritimes.

Please refer to your local public forecast for further details.

DTN News - SPECIAL REPORT: The Salute Is To Mark The 61st Anniversary of The Queen's Accession To The Throne

DTN News - SPECIAL REPORT:  The Salute Is To Mark The 61st Anniversary of The Queen's Accession To The Throne

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - February 7, 2013: In her immaculate ceremonial uniform this proud soldier was marking the 61st anniversary of the Queen’s accession to the throne.

But as the first of 41 shots were fired from six field guns in London’s Green Park her horse began to get skittish.

As more shots were fired at ten second intervals the horse from the King’s Troop, Royal Horse Artillery, got increasingly agitated.

Eventually it unceremoniously threw its mount from her saddle and reared on to its hind legs. The unfortunate soldier could easily have been crushed to death but seconds later she had wiped away her tears and was back in her saddle.

DTN News - DISPUTED EAST CHINA SEA REGION SENKAKU / DIAOYU ISLANDS: China Targets Japanese Vessel as Tensions Escalate Over Islands

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - February 5, 2013: A Chinese patrol boat targeted a Japanese naval vessel with a radar system designed to calculate a range to fire a weapon, Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera said.

The Chinese ship used fire-control radar on a Japanese destroyer on Jan. 30, Onodera told reporters today in Tokyo, adding the government will protest China’s actions. He declined to specify the location, which broadcaster NHK earlier reported was near islands that are claimed by both nations.

The episode may undermine recent efforts to ease tensions that have damaged trade ties between Asia’s two biggest economies and brought calls from the U.S. for a diplomatic resolution. Japan today issued a separate protest after Chinese ships entered its waters yesterday.

Illuminating a Japanese ship with fire-control radar is a “risky” move by China because it could invite retaliation, said James Hardy, a London-based Asia-Pacific editor at IHS Jane’s Defense Weekly. “You are assuming the other guy isn’t going to react in a bad way."

Hardy, speaking by telephone from Bangalore, said that “it might be one of these situations where an individual captain on a ship said he was going to make a name for himself or act beyond his remit.”

DTN News - IRAN DEFENSE NEWS: Iran Unveils Its Very Own Stealth Fighter

DTN News - IRAN DEFENSE NEWS: Iran Unveils Its Very Own Stealth Fighter

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - February 4, 2013: Iran has unveiled its newest combat jet, a domestically manufactured fighter-bomber that military officials claim can evade radar.

Iran claims to have produced a stealth fighter, proof of the country's will to "conquer scientific peaks", according to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said in a ceremony broadcast on state TV that building the Qaher F-313, or Dominant F-313, shows Iran's will to "conquer scientific peaks."

The Qaher is one of several aircraft designs the Iranian military has rolled out since 2007.

Tehran has repeatedly claimed to have developed advanced military technologies in recent years, but its claims cannot be independently verified because the country does not release technical details of its arsenals.

The Islamic republic launched a self-sufficient military program in the 1980s to compensate for a Western weapons embargo that banned export of military technology and equipment to Iran. Since 1992, Iran has produced its own tanks, armored personnel carriers, missiles, torpedoes, drones and fighter planes.

DTN News - KOREAN PENINSULA NEWS: S. Korea, U.S. Conduct Joint Naval Drill Amid Nuclear Test Tension

DTN News -  KOREAN PENINSULA NEWS: S. Korea, U.S. Conduct Joint Naval Drill Amid Nuclear Test Tension

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - February 4, 2013: South Korea and the United States on Monday began a joint naval drill along the eastern coast, military officials said, sending what appears to be a warning to North Korea as it threatens to conduct a third nuclear test.

The three-day exercise kicked off earlier in the day in the East Sea to test the combat readiness of the two allies, in an apparent effort to give a warning to North Korea ahead of its possible nuclear test in the northeastern tip of the country.

Two U.S. ships equipped with long-range cruise missiles -- the USS San Francisco, a 6,800-ton nuclear submarine, and the 9,800-ton Aegis cruiser Shilo -- were mobilized for the exercise held near the eastern port city of Pohang.

The South Korean Navy deployed 10 vessels, including one 7,600-ton Aegis destroyer, a corvette and its newest Type-214 submarines as well as anti-submarine and maritime surveillance aircrafts and maritime helicopters.

"Naval forces of South Korea and the United States started to carry out drills in the East Sea," an official at the Joint Chiefs of Staff said. "The exercise involves naval maneuvers, submarine detection, live-fire drills and anti-ballistic missile drills."

DTN News - DEFENSE NEWS: Italian Combat Vehicle In New Fight With Russian Tigr

DTN News - DEFENSE NEWS: Italian Combat Vehicle In New Fight With Russian Tigr

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - January 31, 2013: A controversial contract for the delivery of Italian light multirole vehicles (LMV) to Russia appears to have survived the recent reshuffle of the Russian Defense Ministry's leadership that saw the dismissal of Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov and his arms procurement chief Alexander Sukhorukov.

But future deliveries of the Lynx may depend on new trials to be held within months as newly-appointed Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and his team want to eliminate all controversy around the contract.

Serdyukov and Sukhorukov actively lobbied for the Iveco LMV M65 Lynx, which was picked over the locally produced GAZ-2330 Tigr armored vehicle in a rare departure from the military's principle of "buying domestic."

Tigr is a high-mobility multirole military vehicle manufactured by Russia’s Military-Industrial Corporation (MIC), a GAZ Group division, at the Arzamas machine-manufacturing plant.

DTN News - DRONE NEWS: British 'Superdrone' Robot Plane Could Fly 'Within Weeks'

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - January 29, 2013: A unmanned British combat drone could be deployed in the front line of the war on terror in regions such as North Africa and the Middle East, if a forthcoming test flight in Australia is successful.

The performance of the eight-ton Taranis "superdrone" will be monitored by Ministry of Defence officials, after the long-awaited flight was delayed by stringent aviation laws in the UK, and repeated technical setbacks.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence said: "Taranis is a trailblazing project that reflects the very best of our nation's advanced design and technology skills and is a leading programme on the global stage.

"Forthcoming Taranis trials will provide further information about the potential capabilities of Unmanned Combat Air Systems.

"Unmanned Aerial Vehicles play an important role in operations, helping reduce the risks faced by military personnel."

British armed forces currently operate drones only against suspected Taliban militants in Afghanistan. But advances in US military technology have sparked a global arms race for drones, and the Ministry of Defence is now committed to developing a new generation of pilotless aircraft with a range of more than 2,000 miles.

DTN News - JAPAN DEFENSE NEWS: ASDF Monitoring Senkakus 24 Hours A Day / Radar-Equipped Aircraft Deployed In Bid To Prevent Intrusions By Chinese Planes

DTN News - JAPAN DEFENSE NEWS: ASDF Monitoring Senkakus 24 Hours A Day / Radar-Equipped Aircraft Deployed In Bid To Prevent Intrusions By Chinese Planes

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - January 28, 2013: The Self-Defense Forces have been keeping around-the-clock surveillance over airspace around the Senkaku Islands in Okinawa Prefecture, dispatching radar-equipped aircraft in a bid to prevent intrusions by Chinese airplanes.

Air Self-Defense Force aircraft were dispatched to Okinawa Prefecture after a Chinese airplane intruded into Japanese airspace on Dec. 13, when the ASDF failed to promptly scramble fighters as a ground radar in the area was unable to detect the low-flying plane.

On Jan. 15, the ASDF scrambled fighters to the Senkaku Islands after a propeller-driven airplane belonging to China's State Oceanic Administration flew about 120 kilometers north of Kubajima, one of the islets.
If the airplane had flown at 300 kph, it would have taken just 20 minutes or so to intrude into Japanese airspace at a distance of 22 kilometers from the island.

The Jan. 15 scramble was one of seven ordered by the ASDF since the airplane belonging to the Chinese agency intruded into Japanese airspace on Dec. 13. The other six occurred on Dec. 22, 24, 25 and 26, and on Jan. 5 and 11. Each time, Chinese aircraft came close to 100 kilometers of entering Japanese airspace.

The ASDF has scrambled fighters against Chinese aircraft in the East China Sea and its surrounding areas 160 times from April to December last year, already surpassing the 156 times recorded in fiscal 2011.

During such operations, China's airborne early warning planes and other kinds of military aircraft were often spotted, according to ASDF officials.

DTN News - CHINA DEFENSE NEWS: China’s New Freight Plane Extends Military Modernization Program

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - January 28, 2013: China successfully tested a locally- built freight plane, two months after the debut of its fighter jet, boosting the nation’s efforts to use homegrown technology to expand defense capacity.

The Yun-20, which had its maiden flight yesterday, can take a maximum load of 66 tons and is suited for long-distance transportation, the official Xinhua News Agency reported. The plane will aid the armed forces and will help deliver disaster relief and humanitarian aid, according to the report.

China achieved a military milestone when its fighter jet landed on its new aircraft carrier in November, extending a modernization bid that’s recorded advances in submarines, cyber warfare and in outer space.

The J-15 jet was developed and built by AVIC Shenyang Aircraft Corp., a unit of China’s largest aerospace company, Aviation Industry Corp of China. It can carry multi-type anti- ship, air-to-air, air-to-ground missiles and precision-guided bombs.
