(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - March 12, 2014: China’s military has allowed the public release of the first photographs of a warplane variant deployed on the Liaoning — the aircraft carrier that saw its first visit by U.S. officials this week.

The new Shenyang J-15, also known as the Flying Shark, is based on the Russian SU-33 design and was disclosed on an official Chinese website.

Several photos of the J-15 revealed its tail hook used for carrier deck landings.

The photos were posted on the Global Times website March 31. The news outlet is part of the official Communist Party newspaper group.

“The existence of the J-15 mystery is finally revealed,” the news outlet reported, noting the imperative of training carrier jet pilots for the Liaoning.

DTN News - MH370 MALAYSIA AIRLINES: Signals Detected By Chinese Ship Consistent With Aircraft Black Box

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - April 5, 2014: Chinese search ship Haixun 01 report picking up a pulse signal which could be from the MH370 black box, Chinese state media say.

Australian planes may be sent to the southern Indian Ocean search area where a Chinese ship looking for flight MH370 detected a “pulse signal” at a frequency used by aircraft black boxes.

But the Australian team leading the international search has warned there is no confirmed link to the missing Malaysia Airlines plane.

According to China’s Xinhua News Agency, the ship, Haixum 01, detected a signal with a frequency of 37.5 kilohertz per second. It was reported the sounds were heard for about 90 seconds.

The reported discovery comes as the batteries powering the black box from the plane are expected to expire as early as Monday.

DTN News - KOREAN PENINSULA NEWS: North, South Korea Exchange Fire Over Maritime Border

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - March 31, 2014: South Korean soldiers walk near their armored vehicles during an exercise near the border village of Panmunjom, which has separated the two Koreas since the Korean War, in Paju, north of Seoul, South Korea.

The two Koreas traded live fire into the sea across their disputed maritime border on Monday, after Seoul said a North Korean military exercise dropped shells into South Korean waters.

"Some of the shells fired by North Korea dropped in our area and our side responded with fire," a spokesman for the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) told AFP.

There was no indication that either side was firing at any particular target.

Officials on the South Korean border islands of Yeonpyeong and Baengnyeong said residents were being evacuated to shelters as a precaution.

The North Korean live fire exercise began at 12:15 pm (0315 GMT) and the South began responding with its own volley of artillery shells within 30 minutes.

DTN News - PERVEZ MUSHARRAF - PAKISTAN NEWS: Pakistan Court Indicts Former President Pervez Musharraf For Treason

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - March 31, 2014: Pakistan's former president, Pervez Musharraf, on Monday pleaded not guilty to five counts of treason, in the latest chapter of a long-running drama between the country's increasingly assertive judiciary and its former military ruler.

Musharraf faces the death penalty if convicted of the charges over his suspension of the constitution and imposition of emergency rule in 2007, when he was trying to extend his rule as president.

Judge Faisal Arab, who heads the special panel of three judges trying the case, rejected a defence plea for additional time.

Musharraf stood ramrod straight and replied "Not guilty" to each charge.

"I would like to ask where is the justice for me in the Islamic republic of Pakistan ... I have only given to this country and not taken anything," Musharraf said.

"I prefer death to surrender."

12,000 Light Years From Earth

12,000 Light Years From Earth

At 1,300 times the diameter of our sun (making it an extraordinary 1.1bn miles across) and more than a million times brighter, the yellow hypergiant HR 5171 A is a genuine super star. One of the 10 largest stars yet to be found, it is 12,000 light years from Earth but is sometimes visible to the naked eye. New observations by the European Southern Observatory, in Chile, have revealed a twin.

• This caption was amended on 13 March 2014 because the original said HR 5171 is one of the 10 biggest objects yet to be found in the solar system. The star's full name is HR 5171 A, and it is not in our solar system.
