(NSI News Source Info) JERUSALEM, Israel - January 2, 2011: Israel Air Force planes attacked several targets in the northern and central Gaza Strip on Saturday night in response to rockets and mortar shells fired at Israel on Thursday and Saturday.

The Israel Defense Forces Spokesperson's Office said all aircraft returned to their bases after hitting a terrorist activity center in the northern Strip and a weapon manufacturing site in central Gaza.

The army said in a statement that it "views the Hamas terror organization as solely responsible for the situation in the Gaza Strip."

Palestinian rescue services reported that two people were injured in the strike.

A woman suffered shock Saturday evening after a mortar shell landed near a kibbutz in the Shaar Hanegev Regional Council. There were no reports of injuries. On Thursday evening, a Qassam rocket exploded in an open area in the Eshkol Regional Council, without causing injuries or damage.

Last Tuesday, a Palestinian man was killed in an IDF gunfire attack near the border fence in the southern Gaza Strip. Palestinian news agency Maan said Hassan Abu Rok, 22, was hit by a mortar in the Khan Younis area. Local emergency and rescue services spokesman Adham Abu Selmiya said that that the IDF fired several mortars, causing five other individuals to sustain light wounds.

IDF officials estimate that following the recent escalation in the southern region, on the second anniversary of Operation Cast Lead, terror organizations will pursue their attempts to target Israeli soldiers on the border fence and may even try to carry out more sophisticated attacks.
