DTN News - SYRIA UNREST: Syrian Army Launches New Raids
(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - August 13, 2011: Government troops and security agents in Syria launched a new offensive in several towns a day after tens of thousands of protesters shouted for President Bashar Assad's death in demonstrations across the country.
Syrian soldiers stand on their armored vehicles which are placed on flatbed trucks after a weeklong military assault that the government said was aimed at rooting out "terrorists," in Hama city, Syria which has seen some of the largest anti-government protests of the 5-month-old uprising.
The streets of Hama were deserted on Wednesday and the city in central Syria that has come to symbolize defiance against the regime appeared to be under full government control after last week's brutal crackdown on protesters.
