Gandhi, the 64-year-old widow of former premier Rajiv Gandhi, has made her first public appearance six weeks after undergoing surgery in the United States for an undisclosed condition. Indians all over the country are celebrating the founding father's birthday with prayers and social activities as a mark of respect to Gandhi, famed as the torchbearer of India's fight against British rule.
